Chill Mode Monday

MONDAY. We are very busy at work; coding, testing and documenting projects.

Though the sky is dark and it was raining, we still managed to have fun and do our ADMIN/HR program "Getting to know" 8liens activity which are Hu Yu? Y u? and House Tree Person. The activity was lead by our Kamahalan, Ms. Reyna.

 We also had talent portion

This is how we do things.  When we work, we work hard, when we play, we play harder!

Chill Mode Monday, Kudos 8liens!

DO “BIG” THINGS

Sharing @ #8layertech during #chillmonday Session.

This time, It's DO “BIG” THINGS.

Read and be inspired! Big things are coming up. Happy Monday to everyone!

Nearly everything a leader does hinges on the type of vision he has.
If his vision is small, so will be his results and his followers. A high-ranking French official who understood this concept once expressed it thus when addressing Winston Churchill: “If you are doing big things, you attract big men. If you are doing little things, you attract little men. Little men usually cause trouble.” An effective vision attracts winners.

Too often people limit their own potential. They think small. They are afraid of risk. People no longer willing to stretch are no longer able to grow. As author Henry Drummond says, “Unless a man undertakes more than possibly can do, he will never do all he can do.”

Looking ahead, we will strive to continue to bring a positive change in the community through our commitment to you our partners, clients and friends. We thank you for your trust and we hope that you will be with us in our journey for the next 8 years and more...

Message from the CEO

Team 8liens
8layer Technologies, Inc.

Of Milestones and Kindergarten Lessons

Message from the CEO

During my talks in schools, not only once was I asked about educating educators. It would seem that there is a great number of them who sees incompatibility as a bug, instead of a limitation. A student who uses a Mac and submits a presentation file without exporting it to a format which the instructor uses got berated for submitting a file with a virus.
There are those who are more forgiving.

A friend's 6-year old daughter complains that she can not find the computer lesson that they are doing in school because her dad's laptop does not have Paint. (It has Gimp). She asks her dad to get Microsoft so she can pass kindergarten.

Younger, I would have been frustrated. Younger and if I were in my friend's shoes, I would have stormed into the kindergarten class and berate the teacher for putting my kid into proprietary softwares.
The lacking ability of some to learn and keep pace with technology should not be a burden for the others to bear. Older, and hopefully wiser, I ask, "Should it?"

8Layer is 8 years. 2 years passed kindergarten. Robert Fulghum lists what we should have learned by this time in his modern classic book. First on the list: Share everything.
We are proud to share a vision. Ambitious, it is, but not impossible – an IT-enabled nation. Here, we recognize the growing importance of enabling individuals. It hasn't been over a year, but with a team so dedicated, we have touched base with a lot more schools than we have anticipated. Zenzic, how the program would be later known, has almost skidded to a stop. The team fought to go on. Share everything. Trials and triumphs, everything.
Fulghum's lesson learned number two: Play fair. Responsibility and accountability have been used interchangeably somehow. Most often, in the corporate setting. It could be because an effective worker can not live without the other. If an employee failed to file and pay the necessary tax forms, and the employee leaves, do we blame the government for imposing taxes? The limitation of one could be a burden and if overlooked too often, it is the company's failure, too.

On 8layer's 8th year, I am proud to walk alongside my team, bruised yet still prodding on to cascade what we have believed in our hearts since the beginning. We are free to choose, we are free to think. We hope to reach as many individuals and share these to them.

On 8layer's 8th year, I stand indebted by the continuous support of and partnership with IBM-APAC, Intel
Philippines, PLDT, Epson Philippines and Philippine Opensource Network. These big names have humbled us. Like a father to a son, they have fueled and nurtured our greatest interest and passion to learn, to share and to teach opensource.

8layer's 8th year beckons an exciting year ahead. This year, milestones will be created and celebrated. This year, we shall strengthen a service-oriented strategy in all areas of our operations. This year, we shall continue to affirm the magic and wonder of collaborative interactions.

This year, we share the fruits of what we have learned and plant the seeds of sharing and collaboration as we move forward.

The mystery behind the hair cut

Since it is 8layer's 8th year anniversary, I wanted to do something which I haven't done in a long time, being an advocate of positive change and all. It is for the students too, my offer and prayer for better education. Let's all strive for this!

Plus the fact that it is too damn hot!

Again, team 8liens would like to look back through all the years we have spent with you. We are excited to find out what's in store for us in the years ahead.

We are continuously building our strength through passion, leadership, excellence and most of all, your trust...Thank you for the past 8 years!

Why Interns choose 8Layer?

When it’s time to choose the all important question of where to do your internship, what comes to mind? Given the vast number of companies to consider, how is 8Layer different from the rest of the pack? Why would one pick 8Layer over the more popularly-known companies?

Ikaw Na!

Kalingap Health Apps at the Intel TechCARE Event

Delivery of Health Care Service is a really serious matter. Health care providers are pushed to give more to be able to take care of lives, our loved ones.

Yesterday (May 24, 2012), at the Intel TechCARE event held at Max's, San Fernando Pampanga, some 80 Health Care practitioners from 24 Hospitals and Providers coming from cities and towns of Bataan, Pampanga and Bulacan converged to be adept of how technology can allow them to provide and deliver the best possible healthcare to their patients.

And though the issue of health and health care is a really a serious topic of discussion, Intel Philippines and its event partners and speakers from Medilink, Infoworx (Digiworx) and 8layer Technologies, gave the attendees an enjoyable and relevant experience of which we wish they will imbibe in them as they pursue their passion of taking care of our health.

Transcending the Value of 8layer Job Orientation

It’s the time when students line-up, submit their application and find a company for their respective OJT subject.

With too many IT students looking for a haven where they can find relevant learning, prepare them for the real world and take a step into the practice of professionalism, 8layer finds it hard to trim down candidates and accept only a few.

This summer, we got our room and hands full with about 10 Job Trainees from PUP Sta Mesa, AMA, TIP and Divine Word College of Calapan, Mindoro and plunge into the 8layer Job Experience encapsulated in 250 hours or so.
But before they get started in getting their hands dirty with hardware and network nitty-gritty, minds boggled with programming and agile framework concepts and firmed to enhance confidence in public speaking, each individual must go through the 8layer Orientation.

Aside from merely introducing our company; people, process, rationale and culture plus our special way of welcoming newcomers, we regard the Job Orientation as a major element of becoming part of the team to make sure that each one is aligned to understanding what it is to become an 8lien.

For information and inquiries on our OJT/ Inernship program please email us @careers-at-8layertech-dot-com.

Operation Occupy 8OHQ

On March 28, 2012, more than 50 4th Year Computer Engineering Students from the Queen City of the South invaded the 8layer Orange Headquarters(8OHQ) as part of their Seminar and Field Trip subject.

They are the enthusiastic and future IT practitioners and professionals from the University of San Carlos, Cebu City.  This was the same time that most of us were just coming back from the Intel Negosyantech Event (Legaspi Leg) so it was Dondi and Jasper’s turn to walk them through KahelOS for these students to have a hands on experience with Linux and Open Source.
Part of their objective was to have a feel and sense of how an Open Source IT Company runs and operates and basically what are the services that 8layer offers.

The Cebuanos came at around 10:30 in the morning, toured the office, listened and participated to the seminar especially prepared for them for two hours. Before they left with the 8layer Experience on our community projects, advocacy and work, they also got home with them KahelOS CD Installers for them to tinker and play around.

This year marks 8layer’s 7th Anniversary.  Last April 2 at the 8OHQ, Team 8liens gathered to celebrate our togetherness through thick and thin as we pursue our simple whims to provide affordable, reliable and easy to use applications for the Filipinos.
It was a really pleasant, meaningful and joyous anniversary bonding that started at merienda through dinner. #8liensunite. Padayon at ipagpatuloy ang ningas ng ating samahan at pinagsasamahan.

Here are some of 8layertech Milestones.
 - As part of our advocacy, we co-launched the release of the New KahelOS Version
- We launched Kasosyo Network and Kasosyo Apps Suite for the FIlipino Entrepreneurs with a huge support from Intel Philippines. Kasosyo Apps is being presented and marketed through the Intel Negosyatech endeavor.
- Our process and work will focus on Agile Marketing and Development
What to Expect from Team 8layer this year.
-Focus and with concrete IT programs for Microentrepreneurs and SME’s
-Making IT work for all Filipinos
-Strong Partnership with other local companies.

Team 8layer wishes to signify our warm gratitude to our friends, families and to our dear supported for the belief in our firm passion to express our fondness for innovation.

Neighbour table overflow

After implementing a network gateway and firewall server solution to one of our clients having 500+ users, we encountered “Neighbour table overflow” error upon checking of the server logs.

This is the command to view server logs:

$sudo tail -f /var/log/messages

Mar 30 10:39:25 www kernel: Neighbour table overflow. Mar 30 10:39:30 www kernel: printk: 7 messages suppressed. Mar 30 10:39:30 www kernel: Neighbour table overflow. Mar 30 10:39:36 www kernel: printk: 4 messages suppressed. Mar 30 10:39:36 www kernel: Neighbour table overflow. Mar 30 10:39:40 www kernel: printk: 10 messages suppressed. Mar 30 10:39:40 www kernel: Neighbour table overflow. Mar 30 10:39:45 www kernel: printk: 12 messages suppressed. Mar 30 10:39:45 www kernel: Neighbour table overflow. Mar 30 10:39:50 www kernel: printk: 24 messages suppressed. Mar 30 10:39:50 www kernel: Neighbour table overflow.

This message indicates that the server is too busy processing some firewall rulesets.

The immediate and rational solution that we opted is to increase the internal ARP cache size of the server and DNS threshold for ARP.

At the console, edit sysctl.conf

$sudo vi /etc/sysctl.conf

Append the following values:

# Force gc to clean-up quickly
net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_interval = 3600
# Set ARP cache entry timeout
net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_stale_time = 3600
# Setup DNS threshold for arp
net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_thresh3 = 4096
net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_thresh2 = 2048
net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_thresh1 = 1024

To make sure that the solution is working, load the new changes using sysctl command.

$sudo sysctl -p

Upon several tests, the solution proved to work.

The Easy and Affordable Way To Reach Your Business Goals, FAST!

The belief that every Filipino entrepreneur deserves a stable and economically viable business is the foundation of the Kasosyo Apps Suite.

Last Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at Island Cove in Kawit, Cavite, the Kasosyo Apps Suite was formally launched to the business owners in the INTEL Philippines' event dubbed as Intel NegosyanTech.

8layer Technologies, the developer of the Kasosyo Apps Suite, shares the intent of Intel Philippines through their Intel Negosyantech endeavor to assist every entrepreneur via relevant and affordable technology solutions in doing business. Mr. Carlo Subido, Business Development Manager of Intel Philippines is the program proponent of Intel Negosyantech.

During the event, Deng Silorio, the Head of Marketing of 8layer Technologies, introduced the Kasosyo Apps Suite, as she encouraged each business owner to empower oneself using the potential of IT Tools.

Understanding the psyche of an individual business owner was not among the motivation of 8layer's Kasosyo Apps Suite but as we say, it is that compelling drive to provide the entrepreneur that confidence of being able to see the bottomline at the end of every business day.

This has been manifested during the DEMO of the Kasosyo Apps by Mr. Rey Portugal-Head of Reaserch and Development of 8layer Technologies, as he was assisted by our Ms. Rosa Tsang - Project & QA Manager. Kuya Rey and Ate Rosa, demonstrated the flow and ease of use of the application and how one can instantly see the sales, expenses, inventory and cash flow at a glance.

The Basic Kasosyo Apps Suite is comprised of four modules: Inventory, Purchase, Invoice and Cash Flow.

As a Kasosyo to every passionate and talended Filipino entreprenuer, we want to be that business partner who brings to the table a special factor to achieve success, i.e. more time for family, resources to pay for utilities, children's tuition fees, and that needed vacation for the family, too.

The Kasosyo Apps Suite embodies that character of an ideal Kasosyo (Business Partner); Reliable (Maaasahan), Expert (May Kagalingan), Easy to be with (Madaling pakisamahan), and Nurturing Growth (Mapagkalinga).

With all the passion, the effort to make the apps easy to use and serve its purpose, the next important question is: Is this Kasosyo Apps Suite affordable?

Because it is powered by KahelOS, no entrepreneur has to pay for the operating system. The Kasosyo Apps Suite is pre-installed and configured on KahelOS and this implies that the business user can enjoy the benefits of free applications to surf the internet, send emails, type documents, play music and video etc. These were also discussed by no less than 8layer's CEO, Meric Mara to the attendees of the event.

Obviously, the long wait for an easy, affordable and reliable business apps suited for the Filipino Entrepreneur is over. With the overwhelming support and belief of Intel Philippines, Kasosyo Apps Suite is bundled with the powerful Intel processors to their Intel Negosyantech Investment Packages.

With the Kasosyo Apps suite, imagine a country harnessing the entrepreneurial spirit of its micro and small businesses.

Adding a dash of Mint on my freshly squeezed KahelOS

I’m such an “eventous” person and because today is Rizal Day http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rizal_Day and 2012 is just around the corner let me just add to my KahelOS[1] experimentation before i wrap up my 2011.

Guess what, I tried installing Linux Mint[2] desktop environment called Cinnamon[3] on my KahelOS 111111. They say that this desktop is designed to offer yet another transitional option between the old, familiar GNOME 2 and the new GNOME 3 on which its new version 1.1.2 just released before Christmas http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/?p=53

And yes to my suprise, it was quite quick and easy to just see a new desktop environment (that is Cinnamon) on my KahelOS Desktop.

Here are some of my screenshots after the fresh install (for i still need to do more exploring before i say more about this experience):

To share with you on how i just easily did this. Here’s a short guide below.

1.Installing cinnamon desktop

Make sure that yaourt and pkg-config is installed on your KahelOS, so you can do that by invoking this command.

$sudo pacman -Sy yaourt pkg-config

Once these software is already installed, then install the cinnamon desktop.

$sudo yaourt -S –noconfirm cinnamon

2. Abilitate/ Activate Cinnamon

by simply opening a terminal and launch “dconf-editor”

a pop up will appear, click org–>gnome–>desktop–>session
then change “session-name” value from “gnome to “cinnamon” then close dconf-editor window.

3.Restart your KahelOS, log-in on your desktop and voila! there’s your new desktop environement.

For me, my experimentation tells me that KahelOS with Cinnamon is a combination of awesomeness and speed! I’ll keep you posted.

Be a hero every like Rizal (Philippines’ National Hero) and Wishing you all an Awesome and Prosperous New Year!

What is KahelOS?

KahelOS is based on Arch Linux.

KahelOS is the first and remains to be the only Filipino Linux Distro with the rolling release model on Arch Linux + GNOME. In the community, it is the first to release (non-beta) such Linux OS on Arch Linux + GNOME.

KahelOS is not just an Operating System so to speak. IT is not just a Technology Product on a Linux and Open Source Platform added to the thousands of FREE Distros already available in the community. IT does not explicitly want to be different or to be set apart from the rest. However, among others, we simply would like KahelOS (just like our team) to be the embodiment of our IT Values and Philosophy.

It is also a gift and a manifestation of the collaborating Filipino spirit that believes in the competence of the Global IT Community.

As an open source software, KahelOS shall therefore maintain to remain free of charge with an active community to support it.

The term kahel is the Tagalog/ Filipino word for the color or fruit "orange".

Depicting fun, energy, fresh and flamboyant; KahelOS, its team and community, would like to imbibe the aura and ambiance of warmth and being sociable.

Kahel also signifies hunger or thirst for knowledge and new things as the color orange is a stimulus affecting both mind and body,for doing more activities, having the appetite and socialization.

How to change your Firefox 8 default page.

Open Source applications and tinkering with it when you know how to modify it can do a lot of wonders for you and your company/ organization.

Let me cite one example.

I wanted to provide a subtle but implicit recall of our corporate values and identity to each of our team in the office. Since we do much work in our PC's (desktop and laptops), i thought of an ingenious way to remind them everyday of our primal existence.

So what i did was to do some configuration tweak of the Mozilla Firefox and integrate to make default our webpage at the initialization of each of their browsers.

There are actually two ways that i would like to share with you on how you can do it for your organization, if you think this is something useful.

1. Changing the default page with the use of the about:config feature/setting

In my case, i was using these components:
KahelOS
Firefox 8.0.1
to set www.8layertech.com, to be the default page.

Steps:
1.Open your firefox browser
2.type about:config at the address bar.
Then it will prompt you with this screen.
Just click "i'll be carefull, I promise" button.

3.Then search on the filter bar "browser.startup.homepage"
4.Change the value to your desired "default" page (eg www.8layertech.com)
5. Restart firefox and you will see that the default page is now set to yur desired page.

Simple as that!
More of about:config check this site http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config

2. Changing the default page for more users than just one desktop.

In our case, since i wanted to change the default page for all users, the steps below may well serve this purpose.

1. Using your favorite editor (such as gedit or vi), copy this;
[XRE]
EnableProfileMigrator=false

and then save it as override.ini to create this file

2.Next, copy this content:
pref("general.config.obscure_value", 0);
pref("general.config.filename", "mozilla.cfg");

save this file as local-settings.js

3.Then, copy this file content:
//Firefox 8 Default Settings
pref("browser.startup.homepage", "http://www.8layertech.com");

and then save it as mozilla.cfg

4. locate /usr/lib/firefox/ either at your file explorer or at your console and then copy the mozilla.cfg and override.ini that you just created.

5.then locate /usr/lib/firefox/defaults/pref/ either at your file explorer or at your console and copy local-settings.js that you also created.

6.finally, start up your Firefox browser and see what happens.

R.I.P Tito Restie/Amang Restie

Mabuting Tito

Pre-Halloween Craze at Informatics -Fairview Campus

While some students are having their pre-halloween parties, break and vacation, the students at Informatics- Fairview Campus took real effort and time before their break to attend a three-hour Talknology on Linux, F/OSS and KahelOS with 8layer's Deng Silorio and Meric Mara.

Deng, Meric, the Teachers and Informatics students had so much fun that three-hours is not enough to discuss and share the beauty and philosophy of the technology.

The students were attentive, the speakers enjoyed the discussion and the teachers gained a perspective on how students can be more with the trends and technologies that abound each day.

It’s hard to pick out words to pertain to great minds, great people, incomparable talent and genius. Simply, IT world will miss you a great deal Sir, Dennis Ritchie.

Another really sad news for the IT world is that Steve Job’s hero, the Co-Author and Co-Developer of the C Language and Unix has also passed away.

Our hats off and salute to Sir Denis Macalistair Ritchie http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Ritchie, the father of C Language (which runs our computers).

Happy World Teachers' Day!

Happy are those who use and benefit from F/OSS

It is not about the technology. Technology is just a tool and yes, the technology is not the end but a means.... F/OSS success is magnified by hard work, passion and dedication. In our case it is about learning, sharing, nurturing and building, for others to build upon and be made available for use... to encourage critical thinking and innovation...to be self-reliant... to foster nationalism, identity and economic viability.

Definitely, using and learning F/OSS is not a step back rather opening oneself, an organization and the country to fossibilities that only we can contain or restrain and while proprietary software has a pricey tag, the gift of knowing the end of utilizing F/OSS, is priceless.

Fresh.Fruitful.Fun.

Fresh
What Linux managed to imprint and instill in the minds and hearts of Linux users then and now is the concept of “new and fresh” even after 20 years. Yes, it’s the 20th year of Linux and there is nothing left to do but be grateful and celebrate how this noble yet magnanimous spark that led to that “big bang of sorts” of innovations and wonders.

Fresh ideas and innovation manifested by a handful thousands of distros contributed and developed by the community all around the world that even Linus Torvalds himself would have never imagined on his own.

At our 8OHQ, the Celebration of the Linux Day- 20th Year gave way also to the launching of the KahelOS LiveCD Edition fresh from the KahelOS Lab and the introduction of the new KahelOS mascot, the Tarsier.

Apart from Meric and Jasper’s sharing of this Filipino Distro, there were also presentations on linux updates, linux development and on mobile as well. The Linux timelines and package management concepts were likewise discussed.

Fruitful
It was a rainy but fruitful afternoon for some IT students of WCST and PUP as linux experts and pratitioners provided them with useful and meaningful insights to arm them not only in while they are still students but when they graduate and stand before the real world.

Fun
Fun games and fun singing time awaited the student attendees while Linux day and KahelOS button pins have been distributed while sharing snacks and laughter too. With these kinds of event, it is fun to meet new people and friends too… to add to your FB roster of acquaintances. :-)
